Joint operation nets drugs, guns and ammo

Commissioner of Police Keith Miller is thanking “Good Samaritans” who assist the police in their work, like the one on Wednesday who gave them information which led to a raid that netted over 2000 pounds of marijuana, five guns, and 93 rounds of ammunition.{{more}}

The drugs, with an estimated street value of EC $1.2 million, along with three .38 and two 9 mm hand guns and an assortment of bullets, were discovered at a house on the eastern end of capital Kingstown; the exact location, Miller refused to divulge because of ongoing investigations.

There were no arrests made in the joint early morning operation between the Rapid Response Unit and The Criminal Investigations Department Narcotics Squad.

At a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Commissioner Miller hailed the work of his officers for carrying out their duties; but indicated that the general public is making their tasks somewhat easier.

“This is because we have been receiving calls from law abiding citizens who are complimenting police on the work they are doing in respect of attacking the menace of unlicensed firearms, money laundering and narcotics.”

“I want to compliment members of the public. I really appreciate the co-operating.”

The Commissioner suggested that persons who provide the police with useful intelligence be financially rewarded, and indicated that a soon to be established “Crime Stoppers Programme” may do just that.

Miller also pointed out that individuals have approached him on many occasions, informing him of persons who are encouraging them to get involved in illegal activities, such as transporting drugs to other countries.

He said that the information received is being gathered and investigations are being carried out into these allegations.

“We have a mandate to be tough on crime, and that’s what we are going to do,” the Commissioner added.

Wednesday’s ammunition haul brings the number of firearms confiscated in 48 hours to eight.

On Tuesday, June 17th, one 9mm and one .38 hand gun were seized, with no arrest. And on Wednesday, a .38 revolver was confiscated, with one arrest being made.
