Belmont man accused of theft granted $20,000 bail
Bail in the amount of $20,000 was on Wednesday granted to a Belmont man who has been accused of two counts of aggravated burglaries and 17 counts of theft.
When he appeared before the Serious Offences Court, Kenrick Scott was charged that on January 17 and February 13, 2017 at Villa, he entered the dwelling house of George Michael-Gopaul with a gun and stole over EC$2,500.
He also faces 17 charges for allegedly stealing over EC$17,000 from Michael-Gopaul in Kingstown from February 6 to 13, 2017. Scott allegedly stole $2,000 every day for eight days.
He was not allowed to enter a plea to the two charges of aggravated burglary, as they were laid indictably. However, he pleaded not guilty to each count of theft.
On Wednesday, prosecutor Elgin Richards objected to Scottâs bail. He informed the court that the police are continuing their investigations and the accused man is likely to interfere with the investigations. Richards added that Michael-Gopaul had also indicated that he is in fear of Scott since the alleged burglary.
He, however, asked Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias to set the bail appropriately high, if it is granted and requested an order so that Scott has no contact with Michael-Gopaul.
Richards further requested that Scott surrenders his travel documents and that stop notices are placed at each port.
In turn, the Chief Magistrate granted the Belmont man composite bail in the sum of $25,000. Stop orders were also placed at all ports of exit and entry and he was ordered to surrender all travel documents.
Additionally, Scott is to report to the Calliaqua Police Station every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. and is on a 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew. He is to have no contact with Michael-Gopaul and will have to get the courtâs permission to leave the state.
He will return to court on June 21, 2017. (AS)
