New Montrose man on wrong side of law again

New Montrose man Kirth Stapleton has been granted bail in the sum of EC$30,000 after he had another run-in with the law.

Yesterday at the Serious Offences Court, Stapleton pleaded not guilty to two gun and ammunition charges.

He is charged that on February 24 at Rose Place he had in his possession one Manufrance Saint-Etienne shotgun and on that same date and place he had in his possession three shotgun cartridges, both without a licence, contrary to the Firearms Act.

Prosecutor Eglin Richards objected to Stapleton’s bail on the grounds that he is currently on bail from the High Court for a robbery charge.

In July 2013, Stapleton was among four men charged with the burglary of the Georgetown branch of the General Employees Co-operate Credit Union (GECCU). He was arrested on July 3, 2013, charged with burglarizing the GECCU building and stealing EC$110,000 in cash between June 20 and 21 that year.

However, yesterday, Stapleton’s lawyer Grant Connell said his client was arraigned, so the bail would continue until the High Court matter is called, which made the circumstances different.

The New Montrose man was granted composite bail in the sum of EC$30,000 with one surety and placed on a curfew from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. He is also to report to the Central Police Station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Further, Stapleton was ordered to surrender all travel documents, including his identification card. Stop notices were placed at all ports of exit and entry and he may not leave the state without express permission from the court.
