Two men charged with Campden Park robberies

Two men have been charged in relation to a shooting which resulted in one security officer being shot in the stomach on Tuesday.{{more}}

Yusufa DeRiggs, 22, of Campden Park and Nigel Byron, 24, of Lowmans Leeward appeared before the Serious Offences Court yesterday, where they were jointly charged with four counts of robbery, one count of attempted murder and one for the illegal possession of an firearm.

They are charged that on November 1, 2016 at Campden Park, they had in their possession one .32 revolver serial number 1304360 without a licence issued under the Firearms Act.

Both DeRiggs and Byron are charged that on that same date, with the intent to commit the offence of murder on Eugene Gordon of Vermont, did an act which is more than merely preparatory to the commission of the offence.

They are also charged that they robbed Gordon of one Blu cellular phone valued at EC$99, and in so doing put Gordon in fear of being then and there subjected to force.

The men are further charged that on the same date, “being armed with a gun and a knife robbed William Floissac of Sion Hill of one Blu Cellular phone valued EC$500 and $2.50 in cash… and at the time of so doing and in order to do so, put the said William Floissac in fear of being then and there subjected to force.”

Also, they are charged that on that same date, “being armed with a gun and a knife robbed Randolph Matthews of Campden Park of one Azumi Cellular phone valued EC$200 and EC$50 in cash… and at the time of so doing and in order to do so, put the said Randolph Matthews in fear of being then and there subjected to force.”

Added to that, DeRiggs and Byron are charged that on November 1, “being armed with a gun and a knife robbed Randolph Matthews of Campden Park and William Floissac of Sion Hill of two cases of Village Ram valued EC$130 the property of East Caribbean Bottlers Inc and at the time of so doing and in order to do so put the said Randolph Matthews and William Floissac in fear of being then and there subjected to force.”

When they appeared before the court yesterday, DeRiggs and Byron were not allowed to enter a plea, as a preliminary inquiry into the matter will be held.

They were instead remanded in police custody until November 10, when bail review will be opened to them.

According to the investigating officer Inspector Trevor Bailey, investigations are continuing and more charges are expected to be brought against the accused. (AS)
