Magistrate describes teen’s actions as irresponsible, ignorant

The actions of an 18-year-old who drove a motor vehicle without a driver’s licence have been described as irresponsible and ignorant.

18-year-old Nikita Cupid was fined $1,000 and disqualified from applying for a driver’s licence for 12 months after she pleaded guilty to the charges of driving a vehicle without being the holder of a driver’s permit and driving a vehicle without an insurance policy.{{more}}

The Campden Park resident appeared before magistrate Carla James at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court last Thursday.

The court heard that on Friday, August 7, police responded to a report of a vehicular accident at Campden Park, in which Cupid was involved.

According to police, when Cupid was questioned, they discovered that she did not hold a driver’s licence.

Once a vehicle is driven by an unlicensed driver, it automatically becomes uninsured.

Cupid, who said that her friend encouraged her to drive the motor vehicle, was arrested and charged.

“This is the most irresponsible and ignorant thing I have heard in a long time,” stated the magistrate.

James, however, showed leniency because of the young woman’s age and fined her $500 on each charge, to be paid before August 31, instead of forthwith, which is the condition usually given for fines in these cases.(AS)
