Hearing begins in matter in which student was blinded in one eye

The court will to listen to evidence from prosecution witnesses today, as the matter in which a student allegedly punched another student in the right eye, causing her to lose sight there, continues at the Serious Offences Court in Kingstown.{{more}}

At the start of the Preliminary Inquiry yesterday, the prosecution called six witnesses to the stand, including principal of the Dr JP Eustace Memorial Secondary School Alwyn Joseph and the victim, Mellisa McFee, who cried when asked about losing sight in her eye.

Ottley Hall resident Akeem Martin, 17, is charged with causing grievous bodily harm to McFee, 16, a student of Largo Height.

On October, 28, 2014, it is alleged that McFee, then a student of the Dr JP Eustace Memorial Secondary School, was involved in an altercation with her classmate Martin, when it is alleged that he punched her repeatedly in the right eye.

Even after spending four days in hospital and undergoing surgery, McFee, now a student of the Bishop’s College Kingstown, lost sight in her eye.

The male student is being represented by Ronnia Durham and the Crown’s case is being led by senior prosecutor in the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Adolphus Delpesche.

Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias is presiding over the matter.(KW)
