Mack fined $9,000 for possession of marijuana

Penniston resident Ulrick Mack thought up a few ideas to raise the $9,000 needed to pay the court for a marijuana fine, but by the time court ended, he concluded that none of them were feasible.{{more}}

On Wednesday, at the Serious Offences Court, Mack pleaded guilty to possession of 2,790 and 4,444 grams of cannabis on May 19, 2014, at Layou.

Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias, after handing down the fine, told Mack that he would have to pay $1,000 forthwith, before he could leave.

Mack told the court that he had cattle that he could sell to come up with the money, but noted that he might only get about $3,000 in all for the animals.

He then suggested that he could sell some vegetables to come up with some of the money, but admitted that he might only end up with $500 from the sale of the produce.

On the day Mack was arrested, members of the Rapid Response Unit (RRU) were carrying out stop and search duties, when they observed him walking with a large bag on the public road.

Mack failed to pay the $1,000 forthwith fine, which resulted in him being sentenced to six months in prison. He was also given until April 23, 2015 to pay the remaining $8,000 of the fine or in default, he will spend two years in jail.(KW)
