Fate of convicted police officer still to be decided

Commissioner of Police Michael Charles says it is too early to pronounce on the fate of a police officer who was earlier this week convicted by the court of law.{{more}}

On Monday, September 29, police corporal, Erickson Browne, who is on suspension, was convicted of a charge of knowing or believing 29 grammes of gold to be stolen goods, dishonestly assisted in the disposal of same, at Kingstown, between January 1, 2013 and January 31, 2013.

Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias fined Browne $500 to be paid forthwith or in default, he would spend one month in jail.

“I think it’s a bit early to say, because I have not seen a report from the court as yet,” Charles told SEARCHLIGHT on Wednesday.

He added that as soon as he is furnished with the report, a decision will be made regarding Browne’s future.

“Until such time, he is still on suspension. After the report, we’ll consider what we’ll do,” he added.

The gold was stolen from the exhibit room at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

Browne, a resident of Biabou, was charged along with the then exhibit keeper, Raymond Stephenson of Vermont.

Stephenson was charged with with the theft of 29 grammes of gold, valued at $1,500, the property of Teresa Simmons of Rockies, stolen at Kingstown, between January 1, 2013 and January 31, 2013.

He too, was made to pay a forthwith fine of $500 or spend one month in jail.

To date, the missing gold is still unaccounted for.(KW)
