Defendant claims he has no temper problem

A 32-year-old labourer has denied having a “temper problem,” despite having appeared in Court for a second time charged with a similar offence as before.{{more}}

Isaiah Francis Williams pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court yesterday, September 22, after being arrested for assaulting his former girlfriend at her McKie’s Hill residence on August 31, 2014.

It is alleged that Williams became irate with Chantelle Browne after she left the bed they were both lying on to attend to her son. An argument ensued and the defendant slapped her about the face repeatedly, causing visible injuries.

Williams was arrested by police officers on September 21, 2014 at approximately 8 p.m., and admitted to the offence when interrogated.

Temporary magistrate Carla James noted that this was the second time that Williams had been charged with such an offence, and inquired of him whether he has a problem controlling his temper – to which he replied: “I don’t think so.”

The defendant was fined $500, of which $300 was to be paid forthwith. The magistrate stipulated that defaulting on this would incur one month’s imprisonment.

Williams was given until October, 17, 2014 to pay the $200 balance. If he defaults on this, he could face an additional three months imprisonment. (JSV)
