‘Bagga’ man nabbed with 665 grams of cannabis

Leroy Cuffy so desperately wanted a cellular phone that he decided to trade marijuana to get one.{{more}}

His plan did not come to fruition, however, as the police nabbed him with the 665 grammes of cannabis that he was going to trade for the phone.

The 22-year-old fisherman of Barrouallie appeared at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias fined him $2,000 and ordered that he pay $300 forthwith or spend one month in prison.

Cuffy will pay the balance by July 31, 2014 or face six months in jail.

The facts in the case stated that on April 25, 2014 at about 10:30 a.m., members of the Narcotics Unit were on mobile patrol in the Harbour Club, Long Wall area when Cuffy was seen.

As the the officers got closer to where he was sitting, Cuffy got up and walked away in the opposite direction.

He was approached and a search conducted on a backpack he was carrying revealed a black plastic bag filled with the loose cannabis material.

When cautioned by officers, Cuffy replied, “Officer, I bring it for Jeffrey. He been going gimme something for it.”

In court, Cuffy explained that the phone he owned was not in good condition.

“I have a phone now, but I not seeing anything on the screen. I been really want ah phone,” Cuffy explained.(KW)
