Miss Heritage faces assault charges

Jonique Chance appeared in court yesterday and pleaded not guilty to assaulting Lauricia Wiliams of Biabou; Trishanna Ross; Lorenzo Williams of Biabou; Ayeika Samuel of Mesopotamia;{{more}} Breni Alexander of Riley; Ronna Holder of Mesopotamia; Samantha Lavia of Bequia, and Brezanne DaSilva of Pembroke.

An altercation is alleged to have taken place between Chance and Lauricia Williams at school the day before.

It is further alleged that Williams was in the area of the Mahogany Bar at Richmond Hill, close to the Girls’ High School, sometime between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. when it is alleged that Chance threw the unknown substance on Williams, which also caught the other students close by.

The affected students were then taken to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital and were treated for minor burns and later discharged.

Prosecutor at the court Inspector Glenford Gregg asked the court to order that Chance have no contact with the virtual complainants.

In 2011, Chance, then 16, won the Scotia Bank National Secondary Schools’ Miss Heritage Pageant, representing the Thomas Saunders Secondary School.

On her way to the crown, Chance beat out eight other students to walk away with the Ministry of Culture trophy for best talent and the Ivy Joshua trophy for the best ambassadorial speech. She tied with Beverna Simmons of the George Stephens Secondary School and Precious Abraham of the St Joseph’s Convent Kingstown for the Miss Congeniality award.

Her reign will end this year. (KW)
