Bullock on drug charge

Fifty-nine-year-old Annis Bullock was described by her lawyer as being an “old, sick, diabetic, crazy woman” when drug possession charges were brought against her.{{more}}

Bullock’s lawyer Arthur Williams shouted these remarks from the counsel’s bench when his client appeared at the Serious Offences Court on Monday, September 6, 2009.

Bullock, a resident of Rose Place, faced two charges when she appeared at court. She was charged with having in her possession 3,137 grammes of cocaine with the intent to supply to another and for attempting to import the drug into St Vincent. She was found with the drug at the Kingstown Port on Saturday, September 5, 2009. She pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Williams shouted his remarks from the bench as Prosecutor Inspector Nigel Butcher gave an estimate of the value of the cocaine. Williams said that Bullock was not aware that she was transporting the drug and he referred to her as an old, sick, diabetic, crazy woman.

This prompted Chief magistrate Sonya Young to question whether or not she was fit to plea. Bullock’s not guilty plea was accepted.

According to Inspector Butcher, the cocaine is approximately 3 kilos in weight, with each kilo being worth US$7,000, for a total value of about EC$56,000.

Bullock was given bail of $40,000 with one surety. She was also ordered to surrender all travel documents and report to the Central Police Station every Monday and Friday between 6 am and 6 pm. The matter was adjourned to December 16, 2009. (OS)
