Trio placed on bond after robbing Fragrances

Three young men who pleaded guilty to breaking and entering Williams Agencies and Fragrances between February 16 and 17, 2008, received suspended prison sentences and a bond.{{more}}

Curtis Sandy, 22, of Fountain, Cleroy Pinder, 21, of Old Montrose, and 19 year-old Jason Williams, of Kingstown all pleaded guilty to the burglary charge when they appeared before Senior Magistrate Donald Browne at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. Sandy was placed on a two-year bond in the sum of $2000 or two years in prison, while Pinder and Williams each received a two-year suspended prison sentences.

The troika managed to get off with $5765.26 worth of items, including watches, an mp4 player, one camera, diamond earrings, shoes, among others.

The court heard that the Carlos Williams secured his business place about 1:45pm on February 16 and went away. It was about 9am the following day Williams returned to his store, only to find that the glass of a sliding window had been smashed and his items were missing. The matter was reported to the police and investigations led to the three defendants.

Luckily, all of the items, with the exception of two bags were recovered. Magistrate Browne ordered that each of the men pay $38.50 in compensation for the bags.

First time offender Sandy was on the receiving end of a tongue lashing from Magistrate Browne. “Instead of joining the cadet force or something, you join two thieves. You are known by the company you keep,” Browne said.

Sandy’s defence attorney Julian Jack said that his client exercised poor judgment and that he should instead be lending a hand to the productivity of the country.

Magistrate Browne said they are young men who should be looking to join the British Army and doing something with your lives. “I am proud to have served there and was promoted to the rank of Major, but the only thing you three would be are majors at the prisons,” said the Magistrate.

Pinder, however, is no virgin to the law. He was sentenced to nine months imprisonment in October 2005 for entering the house of Viola Malcolm of Questelles between the 29th and 3rd of September, 2005, and stealing a gas stove, a bed, two gas cylinders and pillows, among other items, valued at $3734. Williams was also given a one year suspended sentence the day before in another matter.(KW)
