Calypsonian to picket the NLA for entire Carnival season

A veteran calypsonian is staging a one-man protest outside the offices of the National Lotteries Authority (NLA) and says this will continue until the end of Vincy Mas 2018.

Francis ‘Soca-D’ Mayers, a resident of Georgetown, started his protest on Tuesday, May 29 outside the NLA’s Pauls’ Avenue base.

“I am protesting because they are giving you no assistance in culture and they suppose to be set up for sports and culture,” opined Mayers.

When questioned further about his grievance, Mayers said that a few weeks ago, he visited the NLA office and attempted to speak with someone in relation to getting some help in producing a track for Vincy Mas 2018.

The 74-year-old man said he was told to come back as the person who could help him was in a meeting. He said he stayed until the lunch hour on the day in question and still was unsuccessful in seeing the person he was told could help.

“They don’t intend to give you anything to help you with your culture,” said Mayers who revealed that he is protesting although he has already released his song ‘Monica’. He said the producer wrote off some of the charges.

Mayers said he is taking time off from farming so that he can continue to protest as he believes what the NLA is doing is “grossly unfair” and something needs to be done about it.

Formerly known as ‘Sir D’, Mayers is best known for his 1992 calypso hit ‘Woman Gone, Woman Dey’.
