First Aid for eye injuries

Chemical burns are the most common types of eye injuries that require immediate action. Acids, solvents, alkaline agents such as ammonia, lye, cement and plasters can be extremely harmful to the eye.{{more}}

Whenever one is exposed to these materials, one should flush the eyes liberally with water. Alkaline agents are the most dangerous.

Flush the eye with a sterile solution if available. If not, rush to the shower, sink or hose and flush with lots and lots of water. Water should get inside the eye and under the upper and lower eyelids.

Oftentimes an abrasion can occur and cause discomfort within the eye. If dirty, gently cleanse with a clear stream of water and then seek professional care.

In cases of penetrating eye injuries and severe blunt trauma, tape a paper cup or styrofoam cup over the eye to protect it until adequate help is obtained.

Never assume that a blow to the eye is minor. See an Ophthalmologist who will determine if any eyesight threatening condition is present.

Use first aid as a first step. If you experience pain, blurry vision or feel the eye may be damaged, go to an emergency room immediately or call your Ophthalmologist.
