Commissioner of Police – 2015 Christmas message

Once again we find ourselves in the holiday season, that very special time of year when we join with our loved ones in sharing centuries-old traditions, such as trying to find a parking space in the city. However, we can truly say that the holiday season is a time when we can pause and reflect on the abundance of blessings we received in the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force.{{more}}

This year the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force gained top awards in three categories of the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police Regional Recognition Awards Programme. Awards were received in the following categories:

o 1st place – Top Caribbean Career Move

o 2nd place – Top Caribbean Community Police Officer

o 2nd place – Top Caribbean Crime Fighter

Additionally, we were the recipients of a large supply of equipment from the York Regional Police of Canada to enhance the local Sexual Offences Unit.

This year on our roads, we witnessed an unprecedented 14 fatal accidents which resulted in some 23 fatalities. These accidents are a cause for concern. As a result, the Traffic Branch embarked on a vigorous drive to improve road safety by, among other things, increasing spot checks and the inspection of motor vehicles.

Further, Jaric (SVG) Limited, in collaboration with a number of local Insurance Companies and the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force, conducted a series of Defensive Driving Courses involving drivers, several business places, the Taxi Association, NOBA and the Police Department. These steps among others, were taken to minimize accidents on our roads. During this Yuletide season I urge our citizens and visitors alike to desist from driving while under the influence of alcohol. Do not drink and drive.

On December 9, 2015 General Elections were held after several weeks of robust political campaigning. After the preliminary and final counting of the ballots, the incumbent Unity labour party was returned to govern the state of affairs for another five years, having won eight of the 15 seats. The opposition New Democratic Party won the remaining seven seats.

The Leader of the Opposition has not conceded defeat at the polls and has resorted to protest almost on a daily basis. The Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force will nevertheless continue to ensure the safety of citizens and visitors during the holiday season.

The holiday season is a wonderful time for shopping and lots of people will be out purchasing gifts etc. I would like you to be aware of a few safety tips that may minimize shoppers’ risk.

o Don’t leave purchased items visible in your vehicle, as this becomes a temptation for thieves.

o When leaving home, inform your neighbour(s) so that they can monitor your property.

Eternal bliss lies in forgiving one another. This is the message of this holy festive Christmas Season. Let us be resolute and extend our hearts to everyone putting our differences behind us, so that St Vincent and the Grenadines could be a peaceful place for all to live.
