Marketing in the age of AI: Do your words still sound like you?

AI has made writing marketing content incredibly easy. A business can generate a social media caption, an advertisement, a headline, an email or a product description in seconds. That convenience is useful, but it also creates a new problem. If we do not know what effective marketing language looks like, we can easily accept something simply because it sounds polished.

The words businesses use matter because they shape how people see a product, service or experience. A tourism company, for example, could say, “Experience our beautiful island with our exciting, guided tour”. There is nothing technically wrong with that line, but it is generic and could describe almost any destination. Compare it with, “Swim beneath a waterfall, taste fruit straight from a roadside stall and discover the stories behind the places most visitors drive past”.

The second version gives the reader something to picture. It begins to sell the experience, not just the tour.

The same principle applies to hotels. “Enjoy comfortable rooms, excellent service and beautiful ocean views” may be accurate, but it is also familiar.

“Open the curtains to the Caribbean Sea, have breakfast on your balcony and take your time deciding whether today is a beach day or a pool day,” creates a clearer sense of what staying there might feel like.

Even a back-to-school promotion can fall into the same trap. “Get everything you need for back to school at great prices” is a message we have all seen before. “New term. New shoes. New notebooks. One less thing for parents to worry about,” speaks more directly to the customer and the reality of what back to school feels like.

This is why AI should be treated as a tool, not as the final decision maker. It can help generate ideas, explore different approaches and get you past the blank page, but it cannot remove the need to understand your audience, your brand and the purpose of the message.

Before using what AI gives you, ask a few simple questions. Could one of my competitors say the same thing? Does this sound like us? Is there anything meaningful or memorable in it? Can the customer see themselves in the message? Would it make someone stop and pay attention?

The real skill in the age of AI is not simply knowing how to generate content. Knowing Businesses now have access to more words than ever before. The advantage will belong to those that know which ones are worth using.
