New champions emerge at Wendell Hercules National Championships
NEW CHAMPIONS WERE crowned when the 2026 Wendell Hercules National Championships were staged on June 20 and 21 at the Diamond Track Facility.
One of the highlights was Kyle Lawrence of Chatoyer, who pouched the sprint double, winning the 100 meters and 200-m events.
Emerging distance athlete 12 -year-old Jada Davis of High Performance, copped the Women’s 1500m and 3000-m titles.
Another new title holder was Zekisha Kelly of Team Mustangs. Kelly took charge of the Women’s 200m and 400-m races.
Installed as the new men’s 1500-m champion was X- Ceed Sports Club’s Malakye Nero, while Serani Roban of X- Cel champed the male 400-m hurdles, with Jaden Edwards- Barry of IT DAT Academy had the 400-m hurdles title stored in her grasp.
Another IT DAT Academy athlete- Leemore Ollivierre, was inaugurated as the men’s 400-m champion.
Simon James of High Performance is the new holder of the men’s 800-m title. Alison Antoine of High Performance won the women’s Javelin; Denella Creese of Team Mustangs secured the women’s shot putt title.
X- Ceed’s Tarriq Compton won the men’s javelin, and in the relays, IT DAT Academy took charge of the men’s 4 x 100-m, while Team Mustangs won the women’s 4 x 100-m and High Performance, the 4 x 400-m.
But some titles remain unchanged.
Among them was High Performance’s Romaul James who extended his handcuff of the men’s long jump and triple jump; with X- Ceed Sports Club’s Tocarra Barbour, still the women’s discus title holder. Team Mustangs’Teia Laborde remained in charge of the women’s 100-m; Zichri Hepburn of Mustangs- the 5000-m; Trevel Sylvan of X- Ceed Sports Club – the men’s high jump, Kesiann John of High Performance- the 800-m, as well as Reine Browne of IT DAT Academy, the women’s 100-m hurdles.
IT DAT Academy’s Andre Spencer reigned as the men’s discus champion; Kirk Hamblett of High Performance- the shot putt, and IT DAT Academy, the men’s 4 x 400-m.
The championships are named in honour of the late national middle- distance athlete, Wendell “Steel Donkey” Hercules.
