Track and Field repeat national junior sports awards

HANDAL ROBAN RETAINED his title of junior sportsman of the year, while Ulanda Lewis stepped up to be the junior sportswoman at the 2019 National Lotteries Authority National Sports Awards, which was staged last Saturday night at the auditorium of the SVG Community College.

Roban, in 2019, claimed bronze in the 800m for Under- 20 males at the Carifta Games in the Cayman Islands. He added another bronze in the 800m, this time at the NACAC Under-18 championships held in Mexico.

Roban, at the Whitsuntide Games in Grenada, rewrote the Under-20 male 800m record.

Roban was the senior champion at the Inter-Secondary Schools’ Athletics Championships.

Before that though, he was outstanding at the St Vincent Grammar School’s Inter-House track and field championships.

He also ran the fastest time for the St Vincent Grammar School in the 4 x 400m at the Penn Relays, helping the institution to win their heat.

Presently, a student of the Jamaica College in Jamaica, Roban took gold in the Class One male 1500m at the Tyser Mills Classic, last December, Meanwhile, Lewis copped double bronze medals at the Junior Carifta Games in the Cayman Islands, in the 100 and 200m.

She also had sprint gold medals in the 100m and 200m at the Windward Islands Schools’ Games in Dominica.

She had a record-breaking

run in the female Under-17 100m at the Whitsuntide Games in Grenada, resetting a new mark from the previous record established in 2001.

Locally, Lewis was the Intermediate champion at Central Leeward Secondary Schools’ Inter-House championships, breaking her own 10m and 200m records.

Lewis replicated this feat at the Inter-Secondary Schools’ Athletics Championships (ISSAC), as she lowered her times in the 100m and 200m, to establish new marks.

The other finalists in the junior sportsman of the year category were footballer Oryan Velox and swimmer, Shane Cadogan, while Lewis beat footballer Areka Hooper and swimmer Mya De Freitas, to take the junior sportswoman of the year title.
