Shearman resets Wiley College’s 400m record

Vincentian Kimorie Shearman has set a new men’s 400m record for Wiley College.

He did so last Saturday at Texas A&M-Commerce East Texas Invitational.

In a field of 18, which included athletes from the National Association of Inter-Collegiate Athletics (NAIA), National Junior College Association and National Collegiate Athletics Association, Shearman’s time was 46.49 seconds.

This clocking resulted in Shearman topping the field, and it turned out to be his new personal best.

Shearman, on March 3 this year, had broken the 400m record for Wiley College, when he timed 47.97 seconds at the Marc Randle Classic.

However, that record was short-lived, as on March 17, Jamaican Rajay Hamilton clocked 47.44 seconds at the Texas Southern Relays.

Shearman joined Wiley College in January this year, as he pursues studies in facilities management and physical education.

Apart from the 400m, Shearman, a member of the local track and field organization IT–DAT Academy, also competes in the 200m.

His best effort in the 200m thus far is 21.21 seconds.

But at the Bobby Lane Invitational, held in Arlington Texas on March 24, Shearman was able to clock 2 minutes 09 seconds in the 800m.

Before leaving St Vincent and the Grenadines three months ago, Shearman disclosed that his aim is to be part of the Vincentian contingent for the 2020 Summer Olympics set for Tokyo, Japan.

Considered a late developer in track and field, Shearman has never represented SVG at the age group level, but has done so at several regional and international meets.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games has thus far been his major outing.

Meanwhile, other Vincentians last weekend turned in good performances on the US circuit.

Shafiqua Maloney had a wind-aided personal best run of 23.65 seconds in the 200m, at the Gibson Invitational in Indiana.

Representing Southern Illinois University, Maloney is the number one for both 200 and 400 metres at her school.

Also on the weekend, Kemroy Cupid, competing for Colby Community College in Kansas, won both his 100 and 200 metres races at the KT Woodham Invitational in Wichita. He recorded times of 10.60 and 21.53 seconds, respectively.

At the Gamecock Invitational in South Carolina, Brandon Valentine-Parris finished 4th in his heat, with a time of 21.41 seconds.

At the same meet, Soreyna Milller, representing Benedict College, finished second in her heat, with a 58.54 seconds clocking.

And, at the Texas Invitational, Courtney Williams, current national 200m record holder, clocked a wind-aided 21.92 seconds to finish 7th in his heat and 25th overall, in the 200m event.

Like Shearman, Maloney, Cupid, Valentine-Parris and Miller were all part of the IT-DAT Academy, before leaving for the respective US colleges and universities.
