Shaffiqua Maloney debuts on US track and field circuit

Vincentian Shaffiqua Maloney made her debut on the USA’s circuit, as she was part of the Southern Illinois University (SIU) team at the Indiana University Relays last Friday and Saturday.

Maloney’s best effort came when she teamed up with Tyra Wooten, Genesis Rewell and Alicia Reed, anchoring in the women’s 4 x 400m.

The foursome clocked 3 minutes 46.38 seconds, which put them second in the event.

The time turned out to be the fifth-fastest time in school history, and the fastest time by a quartet of the institution since 2010.

In her debut outing, Maloney placed sixth in the 400-metre dash in what reports say was a crowded field.

Maloney ran 57.27 seconds – the second-fastest time in the 400m this season by a SIU athlete. She later ran the anchor for Southern’s 4x400m relay team that etched their collective names in the SIU record book.

Maloney is pursuing a pursue a four-year bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and Geography.

Maloney will race again this Friday, February 3, at the two-day Don DeNoon Invitational.(RT)
