Throws Classic winners in line for implements
Winners of the various categories of the shot-put and discus events of last Saturdayâs Throws Classic, put on by Team Athletics SVG, are in line for implements, compliments the local track and field organization.
According to TASVGâs general secretary, Tyrone James, the implements will be awarded in âan effort to encourage and motivate athletes in the throws events.â
Prior to last Saturdayâs event, James had indicated that implements awarded would be equivalent to the implement weight of each age category and that the implements were not in stock, but would be ordered after the Throws Classic.
Among those putting themselves in line to be recipients was the Girlsâ High Schoolâs Krystal Foster, who won both the shot-put and discus events in the Females Under-18 age group.
Foster, who has been identified by Grenadaâs field events specialist Paul Phillip as a prospect for a Junior Carifta medal in the not too distant future, flung a distance of 10.63m in the shot-put and 28.55m in the discus.
Like Foster, another Junior Carifta hopeful, Andres Spencer of the IT- DAT Academy, won both events.
Competing in the Males Under-20, Spencer was ahead in the shot-put, with a best effort of 13.16m and bested at 33.09m in the discus.
The Sandy Bay Secondary Schoolâs pair of Javed Baptiste and Rafi Lorraine won the Males Under-15 and Under-18 discus, respectively.
Baptisteâs winning distance was 24.72m and Lorraineâs â 28.01m.
Also, Antonio Duncan, representing the St Martinâs Secondary School, won the Males Under-15 shot-put, with a distance of 10.45m, while High Performanceâs Tueshumea Hepburn, took the Males Under-18 shot-put with a throw of 11.99m.
Meanwhile, the Over 20 Males saw Javed Marksman winning both the shot-put and discus, likewise veteran field athlete Genita Lewis in the Females Over 20.
Marksman and Lewis also trumped the javelin events, which too formed part of Saturdayâs Throws Classic.
The other divisional winners were Oranique Richardson, Javon Rawlins and John Compton.
Richardson, who represented High Performance, won the Females Under-15, with a toss of 23.42m, while Rawlins of the St Vincent Grammar School let that implement go at a distance of 29.03m, to top the Males Under-18 bracket.
And, Compton of the X-Cel Academy, had a best effort of 47.50m to take the Males Under-20.
Last Saturdayâs Throws Classic featured some of the athletes who were part of Team Athletics SVGâs last specialized training, held in December with Grenadian Paul Phillip.(RT)
