Of the 77 passengers on board 71 persons died.
The team, which had risen through the ranks of Brazilian football, were on their way to play in the final of the Copa Sudamericana.
In his letter to the Brazilian Embassy, Coombs stated that they were still in shock over the tragic event.
âWe, like the rest of the world are still in shock over the event which has taken so many of your footballers, all of whom were no doubt looking forward to making their mark in the annals of the sport.â
The SVGFF president also said that the SVGFF stands in solidarity with the club and the country in these trying times.
âWe recognize the challenges which both your organization and the CBF Chapeconse Football Club will face over the next few months and possibly years and being aware of this we stand in solidarity with the club and the country in these trying times,â the letter stated.
In the letter Coombs added that the members of the SVGFF are in mourning at the loss of former national player Sean Dopwell-James, who was gunned down recently.
âBut, even this pales in comparison to the loss suffered by your country with the deaths of most of the players from Chapeconse who were en route to a date with history in the Copa Sudamericana Finals in Colombia.â
