Special awards delivered at annual cricket ceremony
There were some special awards for both cricketers and administrators of the sport, when the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association Inc. (SVGCA) staged its annual prize-giving ceremony last Saturday night in the area of the Media Centre of the Arnos Vale Playing Field.{{more}}
Taking the form of gala dinner, current players and those who in the past have contributed to the sport were duly recognized.
Those cricketers who made indelible marks on the local cricket competitions, regionally and internationally, were all rewarded.
Adjudged the Youth Cricketer of the Year was Gidron Pope, who was one of the key players in helping the West Indies land the ICC World Cup for the first time. For this he was given the Clarence âPaddyâ Thomas trophy.
Pope also latched on to the Winston Davis award â the International Cricketer of the Year.
Winning the Local Male Cricketer of the Year â the Lance John award, was Deron Greaves.
A left-handed batsman who represents Carl Joseph Law Chambers ASCO in the domestic competitions, Greaves was the leading run scorer in both the National Lotteries Authority Neil Williams 20/20 competition and the National Lotteries Authority Premier Division.
The other male cricketer acknowledged was Kesrick Williams, who was named Regional Cricketer of the Year, thus receiving the Michael Findlay award.
Williams distinguished himself at the Caribbean Premier League this year, playing for the Jamaica Tallawahs and assisted that franchise to lift the title.
He led their bowling with 17 wickets, and went on to represent the West Indies A team and the West Indies senior team at the 20/20 level.
On the female side, Juliana Nero was the clear choice as Local Female Cricketer of the Year, earning the Phernel Charles award and also pouched the Cinda Bobb award for being the Regional Female Cricketer of the Year.
Errol Hannibald was awarded for being the Groundsman of the Year, while Ivan Eddie Williams was voted Umpire of the Year.(RT)
