RRL, SVGCG add extra level of security for OECS open water swimmers

The Rainbow Radio League Inc (RRL), along with the SVG Coastguard (SVGCG) were involved with safety communications and rescue for the first ever OECS open water swimming championships to be held in SVG.{{more}}

The RRL operators, including a certified diver, using kayaks, were deployed at various stages of the race to ensure that swimmers observed the rules, as well as being there in case any of the swimmers got into difficulty. The SVGCG was there to ensure the overall safety of the swimmers and to ensure that no unauthorised vessels came into the area used by the swimmers.

Radio operators providing safety communications included Dr Perry De Freitas J88NDP, who manned the medical team; Ron – J8NRH; Justin – J88DA and Jeremy – J88NJB operated from shore, while Steve – J88NAC, Leon – J88NFJ and Don – J88CD operated from kayaks.

The event was staged in the Villa-Young Island gut on Sunday, November 13, 2016.
