Some 32 swimmers, ranging from age three to eight years, from two clubs, participated: Blue Marlins Swim Club and Blacksands Swim Squad. The annual meet serves to showcase young talent and highlights the interest in the sport of swimming.
The young fledgling swimmers copped over 30 medals for the top three places in each race, with ribbons being distributed from 4th to 6th place. Races were swum in all four established strokes, freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. An entertaining race, using the swimming aid of a kick board, provided much fun and excitement for supportive parents at the event.
Keen competition was the order of the events, as each swimmer sought to outdo and win as many races as possible from the wide field of their Learn to Swim training friends. All swimmers gave a good account of themselves by demonstrating the strokes learnt through the diligence and commitment of their coaches.
Four of the seven and eight-year-old athletes are now poised to participate in Team SVGâs bid for supremacy in the 26th Annual OECS Regional Swim Championships, slated for November 10 to 13, 2016 at the Shrewsbury Aquatic Centre. Teams from the BVI, Antigua and Barbuda, St Maarten/St Martin, St Lucia, Martinique and Grenada are expected to compete.
