Woods urges Belair residents to cherish what they have
Residents of Belair and surrounding areas have been called on to cherish what the community has to offer.
This call was made by Ashford Wood, chair of the organizing committee of the National Lotteries Top Belair Progressive Organization (TBPO) Softball Cricket Competition, during the opening of the annual competition on Saturday at the Dauphine Community Centre.{{more}}
Wood noted that while the community centre was ready for competition on Saturday, it was not the case three weeks ago.
âI am sure when you look around you would feel pleased at what you are seeing in the surroundings, nice field, nice fencing etc. If you had visit here about three weeks ago you would have been totally appalled at what you would be seeing. Broken down fencing, cows tied on the fencing, sheep dung on the upstairs â enough to provide manure for an acre of ground provision, animal dung splattered all over the field.â
He said after seeing the appalling state of the community centre, he wondered if persons really care about their community.
âIt also relates to persons who are not from the community, because you then will ask yourself am I showing enough appreciation for my community. I am sure for those persons who use the playing field and the community centre to tie their animals, they would never do that in their homesâ¦in fact, if your animal was to trespass on their grounds, you would either meet it dead or you would be paying money to them before they let it loose,â Wood said.
He pointed out that maintenance and upkeep of the community centre is no easy task, which comes with a lot financial obligations.
âIt very appalling and very disheartening when you turn up here to organize or to just work on the grounds or play a game the condition in which we have it,â he pointed out. (CM)
