Reuberth Boyde set for US athletics scholarship

National athlete Reuberth Boyde will attend the Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland, on a four-year athletics scholarship.

As a student–athlete, Boyde will be pursuing Marketing as a major in his studies, while building on his athletics talents. “It has been long in waiting and long in coming, but I plan to make full use of the scholarship to improve my academics, as well as my athletics career,” Boyde told SEARCHLIGHT last Tuesday.{{more}}

Speaking specifically about his goal on the track, Boyde projected, “I am aiming to lower my time in the 100 m to 10 seconds… I know that will not be possible overnight, but that is my objective.”

Having represented St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) at several regional and international meets, including the OECS Championships, CAC Juniors, Carifta Games, World Junior Championships, World Youth Championships and the Commonwealth Games, Boyde sees participation at the World Championships in England next year; the Commonwealth Games in Australia in 2018 a possibility and ultimately the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, as other fulfilments of his aspirations.

Concurring with him was his coach Garth De Shong, who expressed happiness in seeing one of his charges getting an opportunity to gain upward mobility.

De Shong revealed that he was instrumental in sourcing the scholarship for Boyde, through constant dialoguing and updating of Boyde’s athletics progress with athletics coach at the university Cark Hicks.

Reuberth is hopeful that his stint at Coppin State University will open up avenues for others including his twin brother Reberto.

A 200m Under-20 silver medallist at the 2015 Junior Carifta Games in St Kitts, Reuberth was scheduled to leave SVG for the USA, yesterday, Thursday.
