The ceremony to honour Trimmingham was planned prior to his death, as explained by president of the Breakaway Masters Leopold Dopwell.
Dopwell told those present at the opening ceremony at the Grammar School Playing Field, âYes, the Lord knows best and he has called him home… The only thing we can say at this time is may he rest in peace…. as he does so, I am asking each and every one of you at the playing field now, for what Fred has done for sports in St Vincent and the Grenadines, please a round of applause.â
Trimminghamâs family members were presented with a sum of money by the Breakaway Masters organization, with Dopwell suggesting that it should go towards the erection of a headstone or a similar form of remembrance.
Fred Trimmingham made the Grammar School Playing Field/Richmond Hill Playing Field (better known as âPastureâ) his second home away from his domicile at Murrayâs Village.
It was on the Pasture that he honed his skills in both cricket and football, as an off-spinner, a hard hitting lower order batsman and a feisty defender or midfielder.
After serving the star- studded football team Notre Dame, Trimmingham moved to form âPasturesâ football team in 1973, in conjunction with persons such as Jim Ollivierre.
When his playing days were over, Trimmingham crafted Pastures into a formidable unit in local competition, which was the training ground for his elevation to national senior team coach in 1986.
Trimminghamâs honour by the Breakaway Masters followed previous undertakings of that nature. Among the other honourees are Rudolph âMiceyâ Sutherland, Laferne Millington, Gloria Ballantyne and her family and Keith Boyea.
Next to be recognized by the Breakaway Masters is Woodrow âKillyâ Williams, which will be done during the course of this yearâs tournament.(RT)
