SVGCC interns successfully host Special Olympics solidarity football match
The spotlight was this weekend placed on the St Vincent and the Grenadinesâ Special Olympics football team, when the skills of its members were put on display at a specially organized football event in their honour.
Shemika Charles and Gary Jr Miller, interns of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC) Division of Technical and Vocational Education attached to the National Sports Council, organized and hosted the âSpecial Olympics Solidary Football Fun Match,â with funding and other assistance from Digicel SVG.
The event was held on Sunday, June 19, at the Calliaqua Playing Field, with the main feature being a football match between the Special Olympics football team and a mixed Vincy Celebrities team, including local soca artistes and past and present sports personalities of SVG.
The event heard remarks from Minister of Tourism, Sports and Culture Cecil Mc Kie, who commended the college interns for putting together such an event.
One of the organizers of the football fun match, Gary Jr Miller, said Sundayâs activity was well patronized and was a major success. Miller added that the mission of the event was achieved, which was to let the members of the Special Olympics football team know that despite their physical and other challenges, they are invaluable, can do the same things as persons who are considered ânormalâ and can achieve anything they set their minds to achieve.
Following Sundayâs fun match, a prize-giving ceremony was held, rewarding players with medals, trophies and other prizes. A cash donation was also made to the Special Olympics football team.
Digicel SVG is very pleased to have partnered with the college interns on this project, since disabled and physically challenged persons within our society are very dear to the management and staff of the company. It is the belief of Digicelâs management that disabled persons should be given equal opportunities as all other citizens to thrive and realize their full potential.
