GTC supports SVGTA… to host tie-breaker event Sunday
The GrassrooT Tennis Clubâs courts at Murrayâs Road will be buzzing this Friday and Sunday.
The club, in a fund-
raising effort this afternoon, will stage a barbecue, with EC$1,500 the target.{{more}}
Monies realized will go towards assisting the executive of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Tennis Association, as they prepare to host the International Tennis Federationâs Junior Tournament in August.
Director of the GTC Grant Connell, a former president of the SVGTA, under whose watch the tournament was sourced, said his clubâs gesture, âis all in the spirit of the game.â
âThe ITF tournament is a significant event on our sports tourism calendar, so we have to give our full supportâ¦Itâs in the interest of all that we show the world that when you visit St Vincent and the Grenadines, it is nothing short of playing tennis in paradise.â
He noted that over the years, the visiting players have all expressed love for the islands, hence the will to keep the tournament.
âWe have to build on all the hard work of past presidents that built the foundation of this tournament, such as Toney Boyea and Anthony Mc Kenzie ….This kind of support over the years must be saluted and others who ensured the ITF tournament remained on our shores.â
Following Fridayâs fund-raiser, on Sunday, the CK Greaves and Co Tie-breaker will take place, serving off at 10 a.m.
It would see competitors play off in a draw of 16, in a best of three tie-breakers, with a food hamper and trophies, compliments the sponsor, awaiting the winner.
Elated to host such a tournament, Connell said: âIt is expected to be very exciting, following the last blow-out event which was sponsored by Flow… Itâ s great to see CK Greaves still sponsoring tennis and supporting sport development in generalâ.
Connell noted that the company has been sponsoring tennis tournaments for over 20 years.
âWe all know their history as a true grassroots company, nation builders, contributing significantly to the economy⦠They are one of the companies that fuel the efforts at the Grassroot Tennis Club on its journey to develop and spread the game of tennis throughout the landâ, Connell added.
The GTC director expressed his gratitude to the company.
A brief closing ceremony will take place at 4 p.m., with presentations to players.(RT)
