Tennis players revel in mini doubles tourney
Several young tennis players were able to gauge their form when the St Vincent and the Grenadines Tennis Association hosted a one-day mini doubles tournament at the National Tennis Centre at Villa recently.
Afe Lucas defeated Saige Bascombe 10-7, to win the Girls Under-12 title, while Che Connell overcame Afi Lucas 13-11, to win the boys segment of the corresponding age group.
Meanwhile, the pair of Akeil Deroche and Antonio Caine stopped the brothers combination of Rio and Che Connell, 10-3 to win the Boys Under-14s doubles final.
In the Females Open doubles, twin sisters Denee and Luka Lyttle outlasted Brianna Nash and Nicolette Hadaway 10-2, to be crowned Girls Under-14 doubles winners.
And, the duo of Taj Ballantyne and Imani King beat Lyle Hull and Akeem Guy 2-0 in the Menâs Open doubles final.
Reports say that the tournament, which was twinned with a fund-raising barbecue, turned out to be a success at both ventures. There are plans afoot to have similar functions more regularly.
It was the first undertaking of the Brian Nash led executive, which was installed April 2, this year.
The St Vincent and the Grenadines Tennis Association is priming to again host the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Tournament, set for August, also to be staged at the National Tennis Centre.
