Primary school athletes rewrite record books

Several records were re-written during the hosting of the 2016 National Lotteries Authority Inter-Primary Schools’ Athletics Championships which ended at the Arnos Vale Playing Field, April 6.{{more}}

A new mark of 2 minutes 30.13 seconds was established in the male 11 and Over 800m run by the Buccament Government’s Cassio Mitchell. The new record holder bettered that of 2 minutes 31.64 seconds, set by Pamelus Burke Primary’s Handell Roban, back in 2014.

Ulanda Lewis of the Buccament Government re-wrote the time in the female 11 and Over 80m, setting 10.71 seconds. Lewis erased the old mark of 10.89 seconds, registered by the Kingstown Preparatory’s Grandiesha Caine in 2015.

Also putting her name in the record books was Nyana Fisher of the Diamond Government in the females’ Under-7 80m. After clocking 14.36 seconds in the heats, Fisher returned in the finals to register 13.71 seconds.

The male 80m record in that age group was also sent packing by Ethan De Freitas of the Park Hill Government, whose 13.30 seconds outdid the 13.96 set by the Chateaubelair Methodist’s Romario Horne in 2013.

Meanwhile, five relay records went tumbling as well.

The Pamelus Burke Primary is the new holder of the 4x 80m female Under-11. The Layou Government, in the heats, recorded 49.95 seconds, but on the day of the finals, the best time dipped to 48.89 seconds.

The female 4 x 80m too was bettered by the Questelles Government, in a time of 53.83 seconds. The old record stood at 54.20 seconds, set by the Kingstown Preparatory School in 2014.

But the Kingstown Preparatory bounced back to ink their names in two of the three records which fell in the 4x 200m.

No more is the C W Prescod Primary’s hold on the male 11 and Over record of 1 minute 56 .91 seconds, established last year. The new holders bested the event in 1 minute 56.29 seconds.

The other which was palmed by the Kingstown Preparatory was the females 11 and Over, as the new time stands at 1 minute 59.34 seconds, better than the 2 minutes 00.05 seconds done by the Lowmans Leeward Anglican in 2015.

And, the Kingstown Preparatory is no longer the holders of the male Under-11 record. This is in the hands of the Layou Government. The Kingstown Preparatory had a brief hold, as they had repeated the time of 2 minutes 07.56 seconds in the heats, but Layou Government ran 2 minutes 06.42 seconds on finals day.

Whilst new records were set, another nine marks were also equalled.

The Buccament Government was crowned overall winners of the 2016 edition, with the Layou Government second and dethroned champions the Kingstown Preparatory, third.
