SVG Basketball Federation to hold AGM Saturday

The beleaguered St Vincent and the Grenadines Basketball Federation (SVGBF) will hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) this Saturday, April 9, from 7 p.m. at the Xpert Centre conference room, located upstairs the Music Centre.{{more}}

This meeting will elect a complete executive to run the affairs of the federation.

Among the offices to be contested are president, first vice-president, second vice-president, third vice-president, general secretary, treasurer and assistant secretary/treasurer.

Affiliates had until midnight March 31 to make the nominations.

Saturday’s meeting became necessary following a series of attempts to put the federation’s house in order.

A special meeting, called on January 26 to elect a president following the resignation of Junior Sutton last year, failed to gain a quorum.

The second attempt on February 9 eventually became a meeting to elect an entire executive, as several members of the sitting executive had indicated that they too had resigned, while others had failed to function.

But this meeting hit some constitutional snags in relation to whether voting by proxy was permissable.

This led to the installation of an interim committee to put things in place for an AGM, with March 22 being the initial date, but this had to be deferred, as it coincided with a meeting of the Caribbean Basketball Confederation.

With everything seemingly in place for the AGM, a release from the appointed interim committee stated that “Voting by Proxy will NOT be permitted based on FIBA recommendations. All eligible voting representatives must make every effort to be present at this meeting to cast their respective votes.”

The release also noted that all teams that did not participate in competition for the last two years may pay up all outstanding subscription fees, just prior to Saturday’s meeting. The fees have been put at $75 for affiliation and $50 as subscription.

Reports are that former president Wayne Williams has assembled a team, which includes Conrad Simon, Janine Spring, Sanjay Jiandani, Gailene Gordon, Sonya Lewis and Winston Snagg, to contest the elections.

The AGM will also receive the federation’s annual report and audited financial statements, as well as discuss other matters related to the development of basketball in St Vincent and the Grenadines.(RT)
