Displaying a ânever say dieâ attitude, Greiggs came from behind to defeat reigning champions Spring Village United, as the 2015 edition kicked off in earnest last Sunday afternoon at the Chili Playing Field.
Spring Village, immediately after the kick-off, took the lead through Shorn Browne, who finished with some aplomb, completing a methodical build-up from their right side of attack.
Parity was restored when David Thomas scored from close range, following some determined play from the left side.
Greiggs went ahead through Raffique Mc Dowald who nailed a penalty to see his team 2-1 at the half-time whistle.
On the resumption, Browne added his second with another well taken shot, as the match ebbed and flowed.
But it was Greiggs who had the last say, when the prolific Valdo Anderson forged his way through the SV Unitedâs defence to score.
Sundayâs opener was a fitting advertisement for the league and for Greiggs, the 2014 National First Division champions, who will be tasting the Premiership this year.
On the other hand, SV United, who are champions also in the Biabou Nine-A-Side League, will be looking to reclaim the form which propelled the national First Division crown in 2013.
Sixteen teams are contesting the senior division of the North East Football League, with five teams in the Under-13, while six are in the Under-17 division.
There are also two womenâs teams which will compete alongside the Under-17âs.
A collection of $1,000 was made at the match, which will be handed over to the St Vincent and the Grenadines Red Cross Society for onward donation to the Dominica Relief Fund.(RT)
