Bequia United Athletics Club running strong

The 15-month-old Bequia United Athletics Club is running strong towards the goal of educating and developing athletes on the island.

Head of the club Ulrick Gurley told SEARCHLIGHT that is the main aim of the 80-plus members who are enrolled in the unit.{{more}}

“We are also looking at the long-term goal of even producing professional athletes,” Gurley advanced.

He revealed that within the scheme of operations of the club, the academic development of the athletes is of paramount importance.

Gurley, in expressing his satisfaction with the club’s progress thus far, noted, “The progress of this club has been mind-blowing….We have entered most, if not all, competitions this year, even though the struggles to get over to the mainland was hard; but I saw a bunch of willing athletes, including parents, to see progress from the Bequia United Athletics Club.”

According to Gurley, “The commitment to hard training has been and is still a task, but the athletics club has created opportunities for Bequia athletes, both young and old.”

Since coming into existence, the Bequia United Athletic Club has hosted two invitational meets on the island and plans are in the pipeline to stage a Bequia Relay Classic and other events.

As part of its ongoing thrust to make the sport popular on the island once more, the club, during the past weeks, held out of season training.

Gurley revealed that part of the training includes gym work, beach and hill training, along with continuing to work on the athletes’ techniques.

Gurley commended Team Athletics SVG and Michael Ollivierre of IT- DAT track club for the technical support given thus far to the Bequia United Athletics Club.

He also thanked all those who have assisted in some way in the club’s lifetime.
