This, amidst fears of threatening heavy rains, but the clouds held to usher in the 17th occasion of the hosting of the tournament on the Grenadine island.

Addressing the ceremony, longstanding president of the Bequia Basketball Association Sabrina Mitchell admitted that over time, it has been “hard work and sacrifices” to have the yearly event up and running.

She, however, thanked the many sponsors, the teams and especially the volunteers for making it possible year after year.

Mitchell disclosed that it is mandatory on the hosting of the tournament that each participating team provide two table officials, which she said has aided in the proper execution of the event, whilst the players at the same time get a better understanding of the laws of basketball.

Also, part of the opening ceremony was the inspection of the teams and adjudicated as the best turned out team on the night was Warriaz’s First Division outfit.

They were presented with a cake as their winnings.

In the business end of the opening night, Rising Stars II beat Blazing Heat, 71-50, in the Second Division, as competition began in earnest. Also on the night, Duke whipped Warriaz, 63-53.
