South Leeward take Masters Football title too

The South Leeward football set-up crowned off a productive 2014 football season by taking the National Lotteries Authority SVG Over 35’s tournament last Sunday night at the Victoria Park.{{more}}

Having taken the senior men’s division of the National Community Inter League Championships, South Leeward added the Masters title, with a 5-4 win over Computec Vincy Masters in kicks from the penalty spot after both teams had played to a nil-nil draw in regulation and extra time.

Vincy Masters had themselves to blame, as they had several opportunities in the first half, but did not make full use of them.

It was a smooth ride for South Leeward throughout the preliminary phase, who went on to beat Calliaqua one-nil in the quarter-finals and had a 2-1 win over LIME Sion Hill in the semi-finals.

On the other hand, Vincy Masters, who suffered losses in the prelims, had a hard fought one-nil victory over last year’s winners Sharpes in the quarter-finals.

Vincy Masters, in the semi-finals, overcame Layou in kicks from the penalty spot, after both teams had played to a 0-0 stalemate.

Before last Sunday night’s final, Sion Hill also had to depend on kicks to oust Layou 5-4 in the third place play-off.

Both drew one goal apiece in regulation and extra time. Lawrence Joseph scored for Layou and Carlos De Shong for Sion Hill.

South Leeward pocketed $3,000; Vincy Masters, $2,000 and Sion Hill, $1,000.

Each of the top three finishers also received a trophy and medals, with South Leeward adding the challenge shield to their keep for one year.

Bequia’s Marlon James was the top goal scorer with 11 goals, while Vincy Masters’ Melvin Andrews – the best goalkeeper.

Additionally, the most valuable player of each of the teams which contested the competition received a trophy.(RT)
