Females join in schools’ table tennis

The effort by the executive of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Table Tennis Association to bring more female players into the sport is gaining some momentum.{{more}}

The current inter-secondary schools tournament has the participation of the Girls’ High School and the West St George Secondary.

And, when both teams faced each other last Friday afternoon at the West St George Secondary School’s auditorium, the home of the tournament, it was the host school which ended victorious, three games to one.

Millone Edwards outlasted Aliyah John, 6/11, 11/5, 11/7; Rodika Webb downed Jennique John 11/7, 11/8, and Webb also beat Aliyah John, 12/10, 3/11, 11/6, to account for West St George’s wins. Zoe Porter overcame Courtney Bacchus 14/12, 12/10, to record the lone win for the Girls’ High School.

Both schools will meet again, as organizers are allowing for more than one round, given the small number of participating schools.

Also on Friday, the two teams representing the St Vincent Grammar School trumped over their opponents. SVGS Team One defeated JP Eustace Memorial Secondary three games to love, with Team Two stopping West St George, three games to one.

Making it good for Team One were André Mitchell who beat Tahj Williams 13/11, 11/9; Saeed Bowman got the better of Imani King 11/7, 11/9 and Jovonte’ Creese saw off Kezz Small 13/11, 11/4.

In Team Two’s win, Jonathan Cruickshank outplayed Lawrence Bascombe 11/8, 11/8 and handed Julian Farrell an 11/3, 11/9 whipping. Christopher Harris was the other victor for the St Vincent Grammar School, as he prevailed over Douglas Caesar 11/13, 13/11, 11/5.

Farrell ensured that his school had something to shout about, when he outpointed Christon Fraser 11/5, 14/12.

West St George then recorded a three love triumph over the Bishop’s College Kingstown.

Bascombe cruised past Emmanuel Mc Kaskie 11/2, 11/4; Farrell beat Rivas Young 11/1, 11/1 and Caesar defeated Uriah Lyttle 11/7, 11/9.

Apart from the team competition, the tournament has a singles component, to be played among the males and the females. (RT)
