Speaking to SEARCHLIGHT last Sunday at the Stubbs Playing Field, during the closing ceremony of SEDIâs 2014 20/20 cricket competition, London said: âOur plan is to execute community development activities through sports and culture ⦠The main objective is to provide an avenue for residents to display their skills and talents in an attempt to make it on the national teams and beyond.â
London explained that in the process of doing so, they are spreading their wings and inviting players who reside outside the South East belt to provide that level of competition to the community.
âOur policy is to give each team an opportunity to bring outside players; outside players are players who reside in the villages which are part of South East,â London said.
The villages of Brighton, Stubbs, Victoria Village, Enhams, Carapan, Belmont, Bonhomme, Argyle, Biabou, Calder Ridge and Church Road make up the belt.
London is hopeful that the established teams which emerge from the area would encourage the youngsters to get involved in cricket.
She is optimistic that spectators would like what they see from the established players and over time find themselves teams and begin or continue playing the sport.
Considered one of the most vibrant communities at present in St Vincent and the Grenadines, London noted : âWhat we are seeing is the community coming together, where the parents in this case cricket, are coming out to support their sonsâ.
Apart from cricket, SEDI administrates over an annual netball and football competition.
Under then president Albert Harry, a concerted effort was made by SEDI in 2010, through consultations to embark on a sporting revival in the Stubbs community.
A one day sports extravaganza held on Independence Day, October 27 to kick start the process for the current three sporting competitions, was undertaken by SEDI.
Established in January, 2008 and registered as a non-profit body on April 2, that same year, SEDI has as its motto : âPromoting development through sports, education and culture.â(RT)
