Williams tops scoring at CBC… SVG finish last
Vincentian Nyika Williams finished the menâs division of the 2014 Caribbean Basketball Championships as the leading scorer, even though his team was condemned to eighth place.{{more}}
Williams, 26, who is based in the USA, poured in 110 points from the five matches in which he appeared for St Vincent and the Grenadines at the Indoor Multi Complex in Road Town Tortola, the British Virgin Islands, from July 1 to 5.
He ended with an average of 22 points per game and spent a total of 156 minutes on the floor.
In the process, Williams, who plays a small forward, put together one of the better efforts in the championships, when last Thursday he registered 37 points, pulled down 14 rebounds and had 5 block shots to his credit.
His input saw St Vincent and the Grenadines eeking out a thrilling 93-92 win over Antigua and Barbuda in their last match of the group stage.
This turned out to be the Vincentiansâ lone win, as they had gone under to the Bahamas 53-84 in their opening match and 58-86 versus Cuba in their second.
Playing in the minor places, St Vincent and the Grenadines was ousted by Guyana 86-72 and by Antigua and Barbuda, 109-81.
The Bahamas defeated Cuba 75-64 to win the gold medal, while the United States Virgin Islands docked in third, with a 102-68 thumping of the host, the British Virgin Islands.
Taking the fifth and sixth spots were Guyana and Barbados respectively. In the decider for those positions, Guyana beat Barbados 79-58.
The Bahamas, Cuba and the US Virgin Islands have qualified for the Centrobasket Championships, set for August 1-7 in Nayarit, Mexico. (RT)
