St Lucia, Grenada chase Windwards Under-19 cricket title

Either Grenada, or defending champion St Lucia should lift the winner’s trophy of the 2014 Windwards Under-19 cricket tournament, which ends here today.{{more}}

The two entered the last round of matches, which was set to begin yesterday, separated by just three points.

St Lucia was set to meet St Vincent and the Grenadines (six points) at the Arnos Vale One venue, while Grenada was down to oppose Dominica (three points) at Arnos Vale Two.

Grenada – 18 points and St Lucia – 15 enhanced their positions with outright wins over St Vincent and the Grenadines and Dominica respectively.

Facing the host at the Arnos Vale One Playing Field on Tuesday and Wednesday, Grenada earned a four-wicket win.

Set 38 for victory, Grenada reached 40 for 4. Obed Mc Coy had 2 for 9 and Gidron Pope – 2 for 20, bowling for St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Vincentians were always behind the eighth ball, after being dismissed for 109, batting first on Wednesday.

Romano Pierre topscored with 27, as Deron Hypolite took 4 for 22, Daryl Cyrus – 2 for 25 and Daniel Mc Donald – 2 for 6.

Grenada replied with 188 for 8 declared. Cameron Hypolite struck 25.

Bowling for St Vincent and the Grenadines, Kimali Williams took 2 for 35 and Gidron Pope – 2 for 47.

St Vincent and the Grenadines, in their second innings, slumped from 93 for 4 to 116 all out. Pope led the way with 32 and Zianni Da Silva had 29.

Doing the demolition job for Grenada were Daryl Cyrus, who snared 4 for 48, Daniel Mc Donald 3 for 7 and Deron Hypolite 3 for 29.

At the adjacent Arnos Vale Two, the tale was similar, as St Lucia came away with a 10-wicket triumph over Dominica.

Dominica batted first and was dismissed for 138; Josiah Hilton made 38 and Brian Joseph 33.

Bowling for St Lucia, Dornan Edwards took 4 for 36 and Valange St Ange 2 for 48.

In response, St Lucia posted 261, a lead of 123. Kester Charlemagne compiled 58, Shadrack Descartes 47, Valange St Ange hit 34 and Kester Charley 33.

Bowling for Dominica, Gaylon Tyson grabbed 4 for 57 and Kyle Cabey had 2 for 33. Batting a second time, Dominica managed 150. Dishon Joseph scored 41 and Alex Athanaze – 29, as Selwyn Pope picked up 3 for 40, Tonius Simon – 2 for 17 and Dornan Edwards – 2 for 45.

Following the completion of the tournament, a Windward Islands team will be selected to contest the regional Under-19 tournament.(RT)
