FIFA World Cup 2026: Soap Opera edition?

How things have changed over time eh? Years ago, as the FIFA World Cup loomed, most sports fans were busy with chatter, waging bets, putting all systems in place to ensure they get the box seats to view the matches.

But the 2026 World Cup, set for the United States of America, Canada and Mexico, which kicks off on Thursday, June 11, has served up unimaginable drama.

Yes, there is immense interest around the world, but that is equally diminished by the nuances and side shows occasioned by the geo- political ingredients that have been placed in the Cup.

Ironically, this latest edition of the second largest global sporting event brings the widest participation in the final, as never before has forty- eight countries been placed in the zenith of football’s extravaganza.

A myriad of issues have surfaced- namely immigration restrictions of visitors, visa delays, increased border controls, along with exorbitant ticket prices.

Another of the flashpoints is the tension that exists between the USA and Iran, fuelling concerns of possible tensions which can then translate into conflict.

Hence, global terrorism risks, political protests and probable civil unrest are feared.

Whilst global sporting events are ready- made stomping grounds for organisations to get their voices in, be visible, and get a worldwide audience, this one adds variation and challenges never before seen.

Even within the three host countries, there is ongoing verbal trade wars between the USA and Canada especially, that are in the media with regularity, and there is the intense border fallouts with Mexico and the USA over political decisions of the Trump administration.

When aggregated, there lies some uneasiness as to what is constructed as an outlet that sells football in its finest form- an exhibition of talents and a tourism product for the three host countries, with the world looking on for the unadulterated package.

The burden is heavy ahead of the commencement of the most anticipated FIFA World Cup, as nothing is certain or guaranteed, and the pre-shows do not paint a picture of hope.

However, in spite of all the shenanigans, the on-field episodes are what matters as the eyes of the world will be on the four dozen countries which have made it to the ultimate show piece of the sport.

Hopefully, the aforementioned are doused when South Africa and Mexico take to the patch; likewise the Republic of Korea and Czech Republic on June 11.

The sixteen host cities spread across the three countries will be illuminated with supreme football skills throughout the 104 matches that will be completed on July 19.

Flipping the script, this World Cup can act as a game changer for many of the countries which are in battle with their internal and external socio- economic and socio- political challenges.

At the heart of the expansion though, there are sixteen countries that otherwise would not have been afforded the opportunity to reach the finals.

Such is the significant difference of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Therefore, they will be the biggest winners when the six weeks of play comes to an end.

The once- in- a- life time experience for the adds on are much welcomed.

Optimistically, the soap opera that has preceded the commencement of this year’s World Cup can be transformed into a best seller, when the final is contested at the Metlife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA.
