Speech issues on the rise in SVG
OVER THE LAST FEWYEARS, the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital’s (MCMH) speech and language therapy initiative has been seeing a yearly rise in the number of cases that come in.
Speech and language disorders stem from a variety of physical, neurological, or environmental factors. Common causes include genetic conditions, hearing loss, brain injuries or disorders, and structural issues like cleft palate. In many developmental cases, however, the exact cause remains unknown.
Local health professionals, psychologist Kimberley Cambridge (local speech therapist based at the MCMH) and paediatric neurologist Dr. Mishka Duncan-Adams, told SEARCHLIGHT recently that early intervention can help resolve many of the issues that arise.
Cambridge, a speech and language therapist specializing in children with autism spectrum disorders, language disorders and motor speech disorders, as well as adults with expressive and receptive aphasias said that children may need speech therapy to improve communication, articulation, fluency, or language comprehension, while adults who have suffered a stroke may need speech therapy.
