Vincentian teacher is Valedictorian at Southern Caribbean University Commencement Ceremony
A Vincentian primary school teacher was the Valedictorian at the University of the Southern Caribbean’s 93rd commencement ceremony held on Sunday, May 17,2026, at its St Joseph campus in Trinidad and Tobago.
Delivering the valedictorian address, School of Business and Entrepreneurship graduate Shafiya Castello, said it was an incredible honour and a bit surprising, considering her greatest academic skill was calculating exactly how little sleep she could function on.
At the graduating class of 503 students, University President Dr. Colwick Wilson, revealed that women make up the majority of the graduating class this year- 423 or 84% drawn from 17 countries.
Delivering the valedictorian address, School of Business and Entrepreneurship graduate Shafiya Castello, said it was an incredible honour and a bit surprising, considering her greatest academic skill was calculating exactly how little sleep she could function on.
Her moving address reflected on the challenges overcome by the student body as well as herself, with all the moments of uncertainty, unseen struggles, quiet sacrifices, and days when the path ahead seemed unclear.
“Today marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. If there is one thing this experience has taught me, it is that success is not simply about reaching a destination; it is about the growth, the challenges, and the perseverance that shape us along the way.”
Castello, of New Prospect, also acknowledged the profound influence her late mother had on her academic journey.
