SVG-born Garifuna artist to showcase the Garifuna legacy in Maryland, USA
Vincentian-born Garifuna recording artist and cultural ambassador Ganigi, (Evelyn Bowens) will take the stage at the Prince George’s County Caribbean Heritage Festival on June 6,2026 at the Brandenburg Waterfront in Maryland, USA, in a special performance celebrating Garifuna culture, youth empowerment, and indigenous language preservation.
Joining Ganigi for the international cultural showcase will be the Habayan Uwarani Garifuna Cultural Club of Dangriga Town, Belize, a youth cultural group dedicated to preserving Garifuna traditions through music, drumming, dance, and cultural education.
Ganigi, who hails from St. Vincent and the Grenadines – known to the Garifuna people as Yurumein – has long used her music and platform to raise awareness about the endangered Garifuna language and culture. Singing in both Garifuna and English, the artist continues to represent her Vincentian and indigenous roots internationally while inspiring pride among young people of Garifuna heritage.
The collaboration also reflects the mission of the Garifuna Youth Global Connection & Empowerment (GYGCE), founded by Ganigi to help connect and empower indigenous youth through cultural education, mentorship, and the arts.
