Cuba, SVG commit to more scholarships, enhanced security for medical professionals

The heads of government of St Vincent and the Grenadines and the Republic of Cuba committed to more scholarships for Vincentians and enhanced security for Cuban medical professionals during bilateral discussions held on the sidelines of the EU-CELAC summit in Brussels earlier this week.

Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves said among matters dealt with were regional issues pertaining to CARICOM and CELAC as well as  continued cooperation between Cuba and St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG).

Gonsalves also indicated that coming out of the meeting, that there will be an increase in the number of scholarships for Vincentians to study in Cuba. He said that enhanced security measures for Cuban doctors and professionals working in St Vincent and the Grenadines were also explored.

“We express our gratitude for the enhanced number of scholarships being given to us, and the strengthening of the bilateral relations. We discussed the recent incidents on Cuban doctors by one or two persons in St Vincent and the Grenadines and way in which we can strengthen the security,” Gonsalves said.

President of Cuba Miguel Mario Diaz-Canel said among matters discussed were the expectations of CELAC at the summit and also follow up discussions on issues raised during his visit to St Vincent and the Grenadines in December 2022.
