Inmate uses creativity to better himself after prison
ALTHOUGH AN inmate of Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP), Javon Samuel is using his creativity in the hope that it will create opportunities for him when he finishes his sentence.
Last Sunday at the 2018 Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) “Talent Behind the Walls” concert, Samuel joined with fellow inmates to create entertainment with positive messages. His input was a hit.
Samuel’s touch, coupled with that of female inmate Jolette LaBorde, provided patrons with a most entertaining play about the consequences of poor choices, bad company and disobedience.
Samuel also entertained in song and did a collaboration with local panist Rodney Small.
In an interview with SEARCHLIGHT on Sunday, Samuel said he is using his time at the HMP to work on his music. He said he has songs in different genres which he is hoping to record when he finishes his sentence in seven years.
Three of his songs are “Don’t judge me”, “Must touch the road again” and “Sauce pon the pork”.
The 28-year-old Mt. Grenan resident said he is hoping to convey a positive message in his songs so that he can stop youths from going down the wrong road.
“I just want to tell the youths keep from trouble. I have been there and done it already and that carry me down the wrong road. I lose a paper (money) and had to react in a violent way and get charge for that, and have to do 20 years, so now I want my songs to put out positive things, soothing and calm,” said Samuel.
Samuel is the father of two girls, age 6 and 9. He was imprisoned for chopping his girlfriend in her face during a dispute, an act he says he regrets.
