‘Madskull’ third and fourth in Road March, Soca Monarch
Having placed third and fourth in the Road March and Soca Monarch competitions respectively, Lancelot âMadskullâ Gloster says he is only just getting started.
With his smash hit âFamily,â the 22-year-old Union Island resident said the just concluded Vincy Mas 2014,{{more}} has made him even more eager to live up to the standard he set for himself this year.
âIt was just a great feeling for me. I ainât too long start out in this and I accomplished a lot this year,â a jovial Madskull told SEARCHLIGHT in an interview.
Now into his fourth year on the music scene, Madskull said his first release was a song called âWind Up Pon Me Freely.â
With that song, he said he made it to the New Song competition and it was from there, he said, he wanted to do more.
âAfter that, I just wanted to do music. The love for the music just drove me,â he said, adding that he grew up listening to soca artistes such as Skinny Fabulous, Bunji Garlin and Fireman Hooper.
Madskull has done several performances, including: Easterval festival in Union Island, Carnival launch, and Junior Soca Monarch, among others.
For this yearâs festival, the talented youngster released three tracks, namely, âHeart Attack,â âAtmosphereâ and by far his biggest hit, âFamily.â
Revealing how the song came about, the employee of the SVG Port Authority said there is a bar close to where he works and one day, while there, a man called âZeroâ said something that caught his attention.
âHe was there talking about family and how blood thicker than water and from the time I hear he saying blood thicker than water, I said to myself that that was a song…,â Madskull said.
As time went on, he said the song began taking shape and that was when he said he received help from local producers âWetty Beatzâ and âGizmo.â
The song did so well, Madskull secured a spot in the Soca Monarch competition for the first time.
âI wasnât frightened to go on stage. This is what I wanted and I just go for it. I was really happy when I saw the crowd responded in that way to my song. I saw people in the stands got up out their seats and began jumping. That just made me feel really proud of myself,â Madskull said.
Following his performance, Gloster said while he believed that he could have done better, he was confident that he had done enough to secure a top four spot.
He admitted that he was hopeful of grabbing the Road March title, which was won by Delroy âFiremanâ Hooper, but says he is content with placing third.
âFor a young, up-and-coming artiste to place third is a great feeling. I just know I have to do harder next year,â he said.
The young artiste advised Vincentians to look out for even bigger things from him for next yearâs Vincy Mas celebration.
âI ainât done as yet. I am working on a few projects. I am going to keep releasing soca right through the year. I am staying on the positive side and trying to think outside of the box,â he added.(KW)
