In September 2013, approximately 200 students enrolled in the pre-college programme initiated by the SVGCC.
At the SVGCC graduation ceremony on Tuesday, acting director of the college Laura Browne gave an update on the programme.
âThe conceptualization of the programme, when viewed in the context of the education revolution, presents itself as an essential…programme between the secondary and tertiary levels of our education system. It offers an opportunity for those students who prior to universal access, would not have been admitted to secondary school,â she said.
âThe students admitted to this programme, a large number, seemed to have struggled through the secondary system.â
Browne quoted one of the programme facilitators, who opined that the programme should be hailed as a success and be recognized as a potent and vital lifeline for youth.
âAmong the outcomes, it was expected that students would gain adequate content to transfer to the other college programme and demonstrate improvement in the English skill. In that programme, we delivered for the benefit of those students, instruction in English A and communication studies, mathematics, human and social biology, history, Caribbean literature, a foreign language, as well as other life skills,â Browne explained.
The acting director noted that through this programme, the college is better placed to assist the Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines to improve performance in the secondary sector.(BK)
